Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp aims dig at Chelsea Transfer Business

On deadline day, Chelsea oversaw the transfer of Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez for a British record fee of £105m. That concluded their shopping spree in January wherein they signed SEVEN senior players for an accumulated fee of £280m.

Cut to Liverpool, one signing in 31 days and apart from Cody Gakpo, no new player joined the club. When one assesses the Reds’ business over a while, the model which the recruitment team follows is sell-to-buy. Moreover, with our aims as high as they could be, we stand nowhere close to our rivals when it comes to spending power.

There is certainly no doubt that the owners need to invest more capital in the squad channelled towards recruitment as the current model is only sustainable for one cycle and after that, it is the same old thing of a declining squad and a rebuild from scratch. Instead, getting in a player at a time would help ease the transition.

Here is what Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had to say about Chelsea spending the big bucks in the January window and doubted how FFP rules passed such a mass recruitment drive. Quotes via Liverpool Echo.

“I say nothing without my lawyer. I don’t understand this part of the business but it’s a big number. They are all really good players so congratulations. I don’t understand how it’s possible, but it’s not for me to explain how it works.”

No financial backing for Klopp?

Chelsea and Liverpool over the last few seasons have had tough encounters and are obviously among the teams in the league in the reckoning for a spot in the Champions League. Considering them a direct rival alongside Manchester United and Manchester City, Liverpool’s expenditure to recruit is peanuts when compared to these teams.

It is more about Liverpool than Chelsea at the moment. Fair play to Chelsea, they have the money and are spending it left, right and centre. However, the Reds have a niche understanding of the market and are very strategic when it comes to signing players.

But the need for a new midfielder wouldn’t have been more obvious than at this stage but still, if the Reds did not sign one, hopefully, it means we have big plans for the future. Jude Bellingham among others won’t come cheap, and the owners will for sure need to back Klopp and Co. in the summer.

Liverpool should focus on themselves instead of looking at Chelsea’s spending in the January window because it’s important for the team to maintain their own standards and not be influenced by the actions of others.

More Liverpool News:

The club has a strong history of success and a proven track record of buying the right players in the window. Additionally, it’s not always the case that spending more money leads to success on the field, as there are many other factors that contribute to a team’s performance as well.
