John Barnes dismisses Chelsea advantage over Liverpool in top-four race

Liverpool legend John Barnes has dismissed the notion that Chelsea’s lavish spending has given them an edge over the Reds in the competition for the top four spots. The Blues spent over £280m in the January window which is head and shoulders over what the Reds spent at the same time.

The notion is rather incomparable as the Fulham-based outfit could field an entire side with only their January incomings and the Reds signed just one player during the transfer window. The Dutchman joined Liverpool from PSV for a fee of £35m.

Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, Chelsea are not shying from spending the big bucks to get the top talents across the globe to Stamford Bridge. However, according to Barnsey, that does not necessarily give them an advantage over the Reds in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Here is what Barnes told BonusCodeBets via Liverpool Echo on whether signing so many players could give Chelsea an upper hand over the Reds in the clubs’ race towards a top-four spot:

“Not necessarily because you have to integrate these players and have to get used to them. Chelsea needed the players whereas Liverpool needed one or two. If Liverpool can’t get the players they want in January, why spend money for the sake of it?”

“Chelsea felt a more urgent need to spend than Liverpool did but I don’t think it gives them an advantage.”

Race towards the top-four

In a larger sense, having a larger than required squad also has its downsides as team management and other technical factors come into the picture. The Reds at this stage, need at max four midfielders, two among which could be starter quality to help them ease out the transition phase.

Chelsea on the other hand, decide to go all-in almost like there would come no second chance to spend money in the market. Liverpool is good at buying players who fit the team because they have a smart way of understanding the transfer market. They only spend money on players who will be a good fit for the club.

Hopefully, Barnes is precisely right and the Blues get no particular advantage over the Reds. Both teams are currently struggling in the ninth and tenth position on the Premier League table and the road to a top-four spot looks as rough as it could get.

Hopefully, Liverpool spend big money in the summer towards recruitments.

While it is true that Chelsea made some big signings during the January transfer window, it is too early to say that they have gained an advantage over Liverpool in the race for the top four.
