Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says ‘there is no excuse’ after Wolves loss

The most disappointing part of Liverpool vs Wolves was that the Reds were two goals down in absolutely no time and had to chase the game and obviously, it was too much for the team to handle. Two goals down within fifteen minutes of kick-off is never a pleasant experience and Jurgen Klopp’s men learnt it the hard way.

Joel Matip’s early howler saw the Reds go a goal down within five minutes and soon followed a Craig Dawson goal from point-blank range. Liverpool’s defending of set-pieces and dead-balls this season has been a huge worry and it came back to haunt the Reds in the worst way possible.

The performance of the defenders was very tough to take. Moreover, the midfield and the attack had no cohesion and it seemed like the players were just running behind the ball without any motive and that takes away from Liverpool’s identity of Mentality Monsters.

Speaking to PLP via BBC Sport, here is what Klopp said about Liverpool’s start to the game from where it was always tough to bounce back:

“Obviously it was a horrible start. Two goals which cannot happen like that. But it happened and we were 2-0 down because of our own fault. We should have defended better.

“We were passive in that period. I cannot explain it. There is no excuse for it.”

Tougher games to come for Liverpool

Understandably, Klopp wouldn’t have wanted to get into the details but his summing up of the situation was bang on target, unlike Liverpool’s strikers on the night. “We should have defended better”. However, this game is only a learning curve for the Reds and we need to put this shocking loss behind our backs and focus on the next game.

The scary part is we have to face Newcastle and Real Madrid apart from the Merseyside Derby in our next three fixtures. All these three games will come with a distinct sense of pressure and will be a huge testament to the team’s mental strength and the manager’s ability to guide the squad through such a tough moment.

Obviously tough to imagine the Reds ending up in a top-four spot from this position but hopefully, something triggers a change in the way they approach the game and make a better case for themselves in the rest of the season.

To conclude, this result has increased the gap between them and the top four teams, putting additional pressure on the club to perform consistently in their remaining matches. With several top teams vying for the same positions, Liverpool will need to bring their A-game and overcome any setbacks if they hope to secure a top-four finish this season.
