Liverpool midfielder James Milner has rallied support for January signing Cody Gakpo
Liverpool midfielder James Milner while speaking to the club’s official website (h/t Liverpool Echo) has rallied support for Liverpool’s new signing Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo was signed from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window after a spectacular season with the Dutch outfit on top of an impressive performance at the FIFA World Cup.
It was deemed to be an urgent signing considering the lack of depth in the squad following injuries to many key players. However, Gakpo has not hit the ground running unlike some of his predecessors.
There was a lot of excitement surrounding the season when it happened. However, Gakpo has failed to take off and is yet to contribute to an assist or goal since his arrival.
Milner, however, believes the forward should be given some time to settle and believes his performances have been improving and getting on the scoresheet is just a matter of time.
“At Brighton, I thought Cody was outstanding. He’s obviously desperate to get on the scoresheet, but I thought his performance in the game was outstanding.
It’s important that doesn’t get lost because, if you’re not acknowledging the good things you’re doing, it’s going to be hard to get the momentum and the confidence to get on a roll.”
It is indeed correct that the Premier League as compared to the Eredivisie is an entirely different ball game and players coming from foreign leagues do take time to settle. Considering that the team in general is also not performing up to the standard seen before, it makes the task all the tougher for a new signing to settle in.
Gakpo has been playing more from the middle than his preferred left position and that is something that the coaching staff needs to assess going forward. Definitely, a talented player, the 23-year-old needs time to make his mark.
He just needs the right environment to put things in motion and hopefully, soon we all get to see the best version of the player.
