“A league for men”- PL rival star leaps to the defence of under-fire Liverpool attacker

Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson jumps to defend Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Callum Wilson, the striker for Newcastle United, defended Darwin Nunez after the latter’s recent dip in form for Liverpool. The 23-year-old post-World Cup has only one goal and one assist to his name which is a tad bit worrying.

Overall, in 26 appearances for the Reds after making his move from Benfica over the summer, the player has 10 goals and three assists to his name. These numbers could have been a significant deal higher if he converted less than half of the chances he missed.

Liverpool would hope to claim a top-four spot in the league and get their consistency and mojo back. One of the teams in the top four right now is Newcastle and Callum Wilson of the Toons will certainly be a happy man. The Englishman spoke about Nunez and the Uruguayan’s form recently.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast via Liverpool Echo, here is what Wilson said:

“He is young, he’s 23 years old and has just come to the Premier League, which is a difficult league. It’s not a league for boys, it’s a league for men. At the end of the day, he’s come from a league which is a little bit different.”

Nunez for the Reds so far

Rightly said, the Premier League isn’t an easy league to adjust to. The levels in quality between the English top tier and the Portuguese top tier are more than significant and it is only right if we as fans trust Nunez giving him more time.

Nunez, by any means, has not been flopping for the Reds as the media narrative says. Moreover, the player is carrying the burden of a hefty price tag in a completely new league and understandably, cannot make an instant impact.

However, the runs he makes and the positions he finds himself in are certainly commendable and hopefully, the output shows in terms of G/A contributions sooner than later. Additionally, it’s also important to consider the context surrounding Nunez’s arrival at Liverpool.

The team is currently going through a period of transition and is facing a number of challenges, including injuries to key players and a number of changes in the squad. This has made it even more difficult for Nunez to make an immediate impact and it’s unfair to judge him solely based on his early performances.

More Liverpool News:

Liverpool fans and critics need to be patient and give Nunez some time to settle in and find his feet at the club. It’s too early to say whether he will live up to the hype, but it’s important to remember that he is still a young player with plenty of time to grow and develop.
