Glen Johnson suggests Liverpool sign Youri Tielemans in the summer
Speaking to BetFred (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool defender and pundit Glen Johnson has urged the club to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans in the summer transfer window.
The Belgian international, who has been at Leicester since the summer of 2019, is having his contract expire at the King Power Stadium in the coming summer (Transfermarkt). There have been no updates on him signing an extension with the Foxes yet.
The 25-year-old has been one of the better midfielders in the last two years. League leaders Arsenal have been repeatedly linked with him in the recent past, including the January transfer window, but he has stayed at Leicester.
Here’s what Johnson said about why Liverpool should look to sign Tielemans in the summer (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“If you can sign someone like Youri Tielemans on a free then you have to seriously consider pursuing a move. If we’re sitting here in the summer and Liverpool have signed N’Golo Kanté and Youri Tielemans for free, then that’s bloody good business. They’ll then have plenty of money left to pursue a big deal elsewhere.”
Not sure about N’Golo Kante, considering his injury record of the last two years and his age (31). But Tielemans is 25 and the peak years of his career are about to come. So, getting a player of such quality for free should indeed be good business for Liverpool.
It is no secret, not even to newborn babies, that Liverpool need a midfield revamp in the coming summer. We are linked with Jude Bellingham and Matheus Nunes, while there is a possibility that a bid for Mason Mount would also be made.
Keeping in mind that our owners are happy to stitch their pockets rather than dipping in them, signing those three midfielders looks like a distant dream. That is where searching for good players with lower fee comes to fruition.

Tielemans will likely be a free agent and as good a player in the Premier League as anyone, especially at that price. He is a box-to-box midfielder who is good on the ball, has bundles of energy and has a goal or two in him. If Liverpool are in the right shape in the summer, they should look to sign the Belgian.
