Liverpool are interested in signing Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva

According to footballtransfers (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are keeping tabs on a potential summer transfer for Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva.

Along with the Portuguese international, the Reds are eyeing up a move for either Josko Gvardiol, Jarrad Branthwaite or Goncalo Inacio. Chelsea would also be in the race for Silva though.

They would aim to bolster their centre-back department even though midfield rebuilding is a priority, as we all know.

In the past few days, we have seen reports suggesting that Liverpool will look to cash in on Joel Matip in the summer. His contract at Anfield expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). So, it makes sense to sell him now rather than letting the contract run down with no extension signed.

Silva is a 19-year-old defender who operates as a centre-back for Benfica. He has been with the Portuguese since his U-15 days five years ago. He has made a senior appearance for Portugal as well, including one in the 2022 World Cup.

In terms of attributes, the youngster possesses good pace to match up with pacy attackers, while physical robustness is there to win ground and aerial duels. He is also good at passing and reading the game to break down opposition attacks.

We have a good relationship with Benfica, having signed Darwin Nunez from them last summer. That deal seemed to have happened in good faith, which is always good for potential business in the future.

More Liverpool News:

With Matip likely to leave, Liverpool could do with an addition in the centre-back department, preferably a young option than the 31-year-old. Silva has everything in his talent to be a great defender for the Reds in years to come.
