Liverpool hired Frigyes Vanden Auweele in the summer to reduce injuries

According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool hired a Physician named Frigyes Vanden Auweele as a head of osteopathy last summer to reduce the risk of injuries.

The Belgian used to work for a club in his native country called Oud-Heverlee Leuven, the cycling team Trek-Segafredo and the volleyball club VHL.

Auweele was appointed in his role at Liverpool back in July. His main duty is to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injuries to players.

After the horror campaign of 2020/21 where the Reds had injuries galore to deal with, things looked good throughout the course of last season.

Maybe, Jurgen Klopp and his staff thought that after a herculean campaign last time around and having a quick turnaround due to the winter World Cup, the chances of players falling to injuries are high this season.

If they actually thought of that, it did come true. At the start of the season, the midfielders were falling like flies, followed by two of our key forwards – Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, the latter picking up a long-term muscle injury.

More recently, we saw Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate falling to muscle injuries. Hopefully, the work done by Auweele starts to take shape sooner rather than later.

It would have been tough for him to deal with these many issues during his first season at the club. We are slowly getting players back from respective injuries. Jota made his first appearance since October in the Merseyside derby on Monday, while van Dijk is expected to start against Newcastle United this weekend, having missed six weeks of action.

Diaz is also back running on the field following his knee surgery in December. Konate is still a few weeks away from full fitness.

All in all, let’s hope this appointment works for the club in the longer run.
