Young Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic wins men’s player of the month for January

Young Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is named the men’s player of the month for January after his stellar performances amidst the chaos around (Liverpool FC website).

After scoring his first senior goal for Liverpool on Boxing Day against Aston Villa, Bajcetic made his first start of 2023 in the FA Cup replay against Wolverhampton Wanderers. In total, he made three starts and was one of the best players on the pitch in all of them.

Following Liverpool’s first league win of the calendar year over Everton on Monday, Mohamed Salah labelled the young Spaniard as the team’s best player since he started playing regularly.

Here’s what Bajcetic said after receiving the award (h/t Liverpool FC website):

“I’m very happy, very pleased and thankful to the fans, to the players and to the staff as well – and obviously to my family and my friends, my girlfriend, they all help a lot.

“Since I stepped into the first team they’ve [the fans] been very supportive to me. I am very happy. I enjoy playing here, this season has been amazing for me – probably the best season ever. Hopefully I can stay here [for] many years.”

It is great to see a young player grabbing his chance with both hands in a situation where the club needed the inspiration to come from any side.

Even in the recent defeats to Wolves in the league and Brighton in the cup, Bajcetic was Liverpool’s best midfielder.

The 18-year-old, having signed from Celta Vigo in December 2020. He is now a midfielder who has played as a centre-back for the Spanish club’s youth team.

Having impressed in the defensive midfield position in the last few games, Bajcetic was the man of the match against Everton playing in the Thiago Alcantara position on the left-hand side of the midfield three.

Let’s hope that the Spaniard continues to develop himself and produce big performances for Liverpool. Moreover, with Thiago out for a few weeks due to a hip injury, Jurgen Klopp might need the youngster to step up and be counted.
