Speaking to the media in the press conference (h/t Liverpool website), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that Darwin Nunez has a chance to feature against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
In the video of team training after the press conference, we saw the Uruguayan training normally with the full squad. It means that he is fit to face Madrid at Anfield, which is great news for the team and the fans.
Nunez hurt his shoulder against Newcastle United after a rash tackle from Kieran Trippier made him fall awkwardly. He had to go off in that game with some pain. Thankfully, that pain has subsided now.
Here’s what Klopp said when asked about the 23-year-old’s availability (h/t Liverpool website):
“There’s a chance [for Nunez being available].
“From all the possible scenarios, apart from being absolutely nothing; that’s not the case.
“We have to see how he can deal with the pain [and] when we know that, we make a decision.”
Nunez has regained some form in the last couple of games. After an explosive assist against Everton for Mohamed Salah, the former Benfica striker did well to pull down a difficult pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold before smashing it past Nick Pope against Newcastle.
With Cody Gakpo in the middle and Salah on the right, Nunez is playing some of his best football for Liverpool from that left-hand side. His work rate and pace can hurt any fullback in the world.
Keeping his current form and the position he plays in mind, it is such great news that the Uruguayan is available to face Real Madrid. Apart from all the good things the European champions possess, the pace is something they could struggle against.
For that reason, having Nunez and Salah on either wing can cause loads of issues for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. With a vociferous Anfield behind them, expect a fast start from the Reds. The key would be to score the first goal in the tie and make the Spanish side chase it.
