21-year-old Josko Gvardiol could move to Liverpool in the summer
Liverpool FC’s search for a new centre-back may have found its answer in the form of Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender, currently playing for RB Leipzig, has caught the attention of several top clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester City. Liverpool Echo reports the Reds’ interest in the player.
The 21-year-old powerhouse has been in superb form for Leipzig this season, demonstrating exceptional technical ability, physicality and composure on the ball. He has certainly been an integral part of the German side’s success, helping them reach the Champions League’s knockout stages.
Moreover, he was also fantastic for his national side in the World Cup. The Reds’ interest could face an issue due to his rumoured release clause of £98m. We have a lot of top players on our transfer radar, and given Liverpool’s spending habits, it is tough to see all of these big-money youngsters join the club in the summer.
Signing Gvardiol would be a statement of intent from the Merseyside club and could be just what they need to strengthen their defence. After Liverpool’s disappointing performance in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Real Madrid, it has become increasingly clear that the Reds are certainly in desperate need of a new centre-back.
Liverpool need a new centre-back.
Joe Gomez was woeful against Los Blancos, failing to contain the Madrid attack and making several costly mistakes. It is clear that Liverpool obviously need more depth and quality in this position. Joel Matip is also no spring chicken and we could do with additional players in that department.
Gvardiol’s links with Real Madrid and Manchester City may be concerning for Liverpool, but they have a strong track record of attracting top talent. The opportunity to play under Jurgen Klopp may be a major draw for the Croatian, who could see himself fitting in perfectly with the Reds’ style of play.
The prospect of Gvardiol joining Liverpool is an exciting one for fans of the club. While his release clause may be steep, his potential and quality could make him a bargain in the long run.

Liverpool’s positive relationship with Red Bull institutions could play a key role in their pursuit of Gvardiol. The Merseyside club has previously used their connections with Red Bull to secure the signing of Ibrahima Konate in May 2021. The Frenchman has been a solid addition to Liverpool’s defence and hopefully, Gvardiol could follow in his footsteps.
