Callum Wilson makes a weird claim of what Newcastle United did to Liverpool

Speaking to BBC Footballers’ Football Podcast (h/t Liverpool Echo), Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson does not believe that Liverpool are back and claimed that the Magpies let the Reds win.

After getting past Everton last Monday, Liverpool went away to Newcastle and beat them 2-0 to close the gap between them and the Magpies. The thing to note is that Jurgen Klopp’s men were already two goals ahead before Nick Pope made a stupid decision and got himself sent off.

So, it cannot be said that the Reds were lucky to be playing against 10 men. While the league results looked promising, Klopp’s team were given a footballing lesson by Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Here’s Wilson with a comment on Liverpool’s form and the game on Saturday (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Liverpool played well on the day and got the result, but overall I think our performance warranted more out of the game. You’re trying to say are Liverpool back? They’ve won two games over the last couple of weeks, and we technically let them win because it was a poor performance from our point of view.”

Irrespective of what happened against Madrid, it was a big result for Liverpool to beat Everton and Newcastle in the space of five days. The latter, according to the media, have been one of the best teams in the league.

Moreover, Eddie Howe’s men hadn’t lost a game at home this season before that as well. So, whichever type of win the Reds posted on the Tyneside, it would have been considered big keeping in mind the context and form of both the teams.

To watch that and then come out to say what Wilson did is weird, to say the least. One can understand that it was difficult for the Newcastle striker to digest that Liverpool were the better team on the night.

The two goals scored by the away side were of top quality. Instead of acknowledging that, saying these things shows the standard of thinking.

Before Newcastle play in the league next, Liverpool could be level on points with them, provided the Reds win the two games against Crystal Palace and Wolves by then. So, it is a big week coming for Klopp’s side in their quest for finishing fourth in the table.
