Jamie Carragher counts the number of players Liverpool need in the summer
Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo Show (h/t Express), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher points out the number of players the Reds need to sign in the coming summer window.
After the thumping defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League, the reality has struck Jurgen Klopp’s men as to how far they are from the absolute elite in European football. That after contesting a Champions League final against the same team eight months ago is some drop-off.
It was understandable that after playing every game possible last season, the team needed a refresh in the last summer window. They did not get that, with Darwin Nunez being the only marquee signing.
Talking about the impact of the Madrid defeat and what Liverpool need to do in the summer, here’s Carragher (h/t Express):
“I wouldn’t say it’s the ‘final nail in the coffin’, but I think there’s a real realisation now that Liverpool do need to attack the market in the summer.
“I would say the midfield needs three, at least, because there are players leaving on free transfers. And I think Liverpool need a couple of defenders as well.
“So you’re talking five or six players need to come in, and obviously players will go out. But that team have been together for so long. It does need breaking up now.”
With how far things have fallen this season, Liverpool have no choice but to attack the market. The owners, who have been pretty stringent with their financial backing so far, have to loosen their pockets in the summer to support Klopp as much as they can.
While Jude Bellingham is the leading target for the Reds, they need more than one midfielder. Matheus Nunes and Mason Mount are other targets too.
In the centre-back department, Joe Gomez is struggling for form and has mistakes in him. Joel Matip is expected to be sold in the summer, while Nat Phillips will leave once and for all. It means that the club have to sign a centre-back.

It amounts to up to four or five players Liverpool have to bring in during the summer window. Whether they can do it remains to be seen. They are within touching distance of the fourth spot in the league. Participating in the Champions League could be important to complete deals as well.
