PSV Eindhoven fans pay stunning tribute to Liverpool’s Cody Gadkpo during Europa League clash
PSV Eindhoven fans did not have the chance to properly say goodbye to one of their club’s most influential players in modern times, Cody Gakpo, as he sealed a January move to Liverpool.
Manchester United were also keen on signing the 23-year-old Netherlands international, but the Reds beat the Red Devils to the punch and agreed to pay a fee of 37million Pounds. He has since had a tough start to life at Anfield.
He blanked for his first six games for the Reds before scoring against Everton and Newcastle United in the Premier League. The Dutchman also played in the 5-2 loss against Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night but had no tangible impact on the game.
With no immediate commitment and the game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League being a couple of days away, Gakpo was present at his former club’s Europa League second-leg clash against Sevilla on Thursday night.
Gakpo still loved by PSV fans
The Dutch side lost the first leg 3-0 in Spain and needed a heroic comeback in the second leg at the Philips Stadion. With the score at 0-0, PSV fans were still jubilant at half-time and gave Gakpo a rousing welcome (or, a farewell), as seen in the video shared by PSV’s official Twitter account above.
He was clearly a favourite at PSV. Gakpo won the Eredivisie title once with them and registered 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 senior games for the club.
Make no mistake, they are a giant club in the Netherlands. But it has been the case in recent decades that Eredivisie superstars tend to leave when a ‘bigger’ European club comes calling.
The same was the case with Gakpo, who was also heavily pursued by Manchester United. Unfortunately for PSV, the Dutchman’s presence could not help them turn the tie around against Sevilla.

They won 2-0 but crashed out on aggregate. For Gakpo, this would be a memorable game given the way he was serenaded by the home fans. It also confirms once and for all that he left the Dutch giants on good terms and there is no bad blood between him and the majority of the fans.
