Jurgen Klopp talks about Liverpool FC’s rebuild in the summer

There was a lot of positivity in the air at Merseyside when Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp signed a contract extension at the Reds earlier this year in April taking his deal with the club until 2026 (Transfermarkt). However, one would have never imagined what transpired later on.

Fast forward to February 2023, the Reds are in the eighth position in the league table and are somewhat struggling to find consistency in the domestic championship. Knocked out of both domestic cups, the UEFA Champions League is probably our only hope of silverware this season.

But despite that, our European nemesis in Real Madrid landed at Merseyside and broke the hearts of the fans at Anfield as they took the cleaners and beat the Reds 2-5. There is a major need for a rebuild at the club, and the manager affirmed that in his press conference.

Here is what Klopp told the reporters via Liverpool Echo:

“It’s one of the reasons I signed a new contract [to build new team]. Last season was not one for a big change. If you want a big change, at this club you cannot make loads of changes and realise no-one wants to leave.”

There is a sense that Klopp saying this means he would have envisioned the short-term future of the club and that is why to secure a part of it, he extended his contract with the club. There was obviously the need for a major change in the summer as well, but that obviously didn’t transpire due to the club’s spending habits.

Squad overhaul at the Reds

Liverpool needs to bring in new blood in the midfield to inject some creativity and energy into the team. The club needs a playmaker who can create chances for the forwards and break down defences.

Additionally, Liverpool needs a midfielder who can dominate in the middle of the park and win the ball back for the team. These qualities are essential if Liverpool is to challenge for major trophies in the future.

Moreover, Liverpool must also address the depth issue in midfield. The club has struggled with injuries to key players, leaving the team with few options in midfield. The club needs to invest in quality backup players who can step in and perform when the regular starters are unavailable.

This will ensure that Liverpool has the necessary depth to compete on all fronts. In conclusion, Liverpool needs an overhaul in the midfield if they are to compete for major honours in the future. The club needs to bring in new players who can provide creativity, energy and defensive prowess. Like a Jude Bellingham for instance.

The midfield is the engine room of any football team, and Liverpool’s current midfield has been found wanting. If the club can strengthen this area of the pitch, they will be better equipped to compete for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
