“In my Hull days”- Andy Robertson recalls past experience and backs Liverpool to go on a top-four ‘run’

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson backs the squad to make a push for a top-four finish

In what has been a frustrating two weeks for Liverpool, the hopes of a top-four finish have taken a significant dent. The loss to Real Madrid was evidently extremely demoralising as what followed was a disheartening draw against Crystal Palace. However, Andy Robertson is hopeful of a top-four finish for Liverpool this season.

Robbo drew a parallel between the current situation at Liverpool and his playing days at Hull City. The 28-year-old had his fair share of relegation battles during his days at Yorkshire and spoke about the same, comparing those times with that of Liverpool right now.

As a matter of fact, the Reds themselves are no new to this situation as a totally out-of-order injury-laid Liverpool squad sneaked into a top-four spot in the 2020/21 season. Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams were our starting centre-backs back then, and we are much stronger in depth compared to that season.

Speaking exclusively to ECHO, here is what Robbo said while comparing his earlier playing days with the situation of the Reds right now:

“Look, of course, there’s always a team that goes on the run at the end. I always remember in my Hull days it was a relegation battle and there was always a team that goes on a run,”

“There’s always a team that goes on a run to get top four and a team that potentially goes on a run to get the title.”

“So like I say, we have to be in the race. We’ve got 15 games now and if we do that we have to keep picking up points and when it is time for the sprint finish, we have to be in the race and we have to put ourselves in a position where we can still hunt the teams above us to maybe take their place.”

Robbo shows confidence in the squad

The Reds have three back-to-back league games before the game against Real Madrid. Wolves and Manchester United will travel to Merseyside before we go to the Vitality Stadium to play the reverse fixture against Bournemouth, who gave us our record-equalling 9-0 win at Anfield.

Hopefully, as Andy said, we get on a run like the 20/21 season where we went 10 games unbeaten to get third. Moreover, in 12 games between March and May last season Liverpool picked up 32 points and gave Manchester City a tough fight to the last day of the league campaign.

Despite our setbacks, Robbo remains upbeat about Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four. The Scottish defender knows that the team needs to string together a series of positive results in order to achieve their goal, but he believes that the squad has the quality and determination to do so.

Liverpool will be eager to secure a top-four spot in order to maximise their revenue and strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window which is an utmost necessity given the ageing squad right now.

With a number of important fixtures still to play, including clashes with fellow top-four contenders like Chelsea and Newcastle, Liverpool’s fate is in their own hands. If they can stay focused, play to their strengths, and maintain their belief in themselves, there is no reason why they cannot achieve their goal and secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
