Wolves manager says Liverpool “deserved a lot more” against Real Madrid

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui believes Liverpool deserved more vs Real Madrid

Liverpool will meet Wolverhampton Wanderers again for the fourth time in eleven days when the two sides meet mid-week in the double game week fixture for Liverpool.

Currently nine points off the top four with two games in hand, Liverpool have the chance to close the gap on Tottenham Hotspur and it starts with the home game against Wolves.

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui, while speaking on the game (h/t Liverpool Echo) believes that his team will face a good team, despite the result in the last home game against Real Madrid.

“They play in the same way at home or away, but the difficulties of Anfield are clear, it’s a stadium where they push a lot. I have seen in the last match they played there against Real Madrid, I thought they played a fantastic first half, in my opinion, and they deserved a lot more, but this is football.

“Tomorrow I am sure we’re going to find a good team, a good environment and we have to be ready. We will try to play in the same way, it’s not the same to playing at home, of course, but we try.”

It is true that we were top of our game for the first half an hour against Real Madrid but the manner of our falling in the second half was glaring, to say the least. To concede five goals after being two up is appalling and screams of incompetence, especially in defence and midfield.

The performance was not in accordance with the standards established by the team in the recent past and laid bare the difference in confidence and form of key players seen way more frequently in the current season.

Thanks to Lopetegui for the compliment but most of our fans would believe that a 5-2 loss was what we deserved. The silver lining from it would be that it properly underlined on the global stage the problems we currently have, and put the management under pressure to fix it.

Such an embarrassment would surely push the decision-makers in the direction of making big changes in the squad in terms of incomings and outgoings.

The draw against Crystal Palace on the weekend did not help much either whereas a good performance and three points would have done wonders for the confidence of many players.

Wolves on the other hand are improving under a new manager and look solid as compared to their shaky start to the season and the 3-0 loss in the away game was evidence of that.

It certainly would not be an easy game but a game wherein anything other than a victory could lead to bigger problems with the derby game against arch-rivals Manchester United on the horizon.
