“Can help us”- Wolves boss expects Liverpool target to do his job against the Reds later tonight

Wolves boss on what he wants from Matheus Nunes amidst links with Liverpool

Speaking to the media ahead of the Liverpool game (h/t Birmingham Mail), Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui issues an ultimatum for Matheus Nunes

and addressed the rumours around his future with Liverpool linked.

Wolves signed Nunes last summer from Sporting CP for a fee of around £38m. While the Portuguese international has shown glimpses of what he is all about in his first season in England, Lopetegui wants more from him in the coming games.

Liverpool were linked with the 24-year-old last summer and are one of the front-runners to go back for him in the coming summer too. Chelsea have been sporadically linked as well.

Here’s what Lopetegui said on what he wants from Nunes and addressed his future rumours (h/t Birmingham Mail):

“I don’t think about the future of the players. The future of the players is to be able to play today. After, we will see. The most important thing is to think about the next match, nothing more.

“It’s a good thing to have versatile midfielders. He is a complete player and he has different demands. Physically he is a strong player, technically too, and he is getting used to it. Sometimes he plays inside, sometimes outside, but he can help us and we are happy with him.”

We know Nunes is a quality player who is only going to get better the more he plays. As Lopetegui mentions, he is both physically and technically strong, which is good for a midfield player in the Premier League.

One thing he can add is goals and assists from midfield. In 21 league appearances, the former Sporting star has only got one assist to his name. So, while he is doing well in the middle, he can do more in the final third.

From Liverpool’s viewpoint, we can see why the Reds have kept a close eye on Nunes over the last year or so. He can offer box-to-box running along with quality on the ball and intense work rate off it.

More Liverpool News:

We play Wolves later tonight in an important game for our top-four push. It could also be an Anfield audition for Nunes where he can show what he can add to an ageing Liverpool midfield in the coming years.
