Liverpool have shown interest in signing Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante this summer, as per journalist Pete O’Rourke. The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season, and while the London club is looking to extend his stay, Kante has attracted several suitors.
The 31-year-old has stood sidelined with an injury since the second game of the season and is yet to feature under new manager Graham Potter. Despite his absence, Kante’s impressive performances over the years have made him one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe.
Liverpool’s interest in Kante is understandable, given their midfield issues this season. The current lot has been inconsistent, and there are worries about an ageing midfield. Kante’s high-energy and tireless work rate would provide a much-needed boost to Liverpool’s midfield, which has lacked dynamism and creativity this season.
Speaking to Give Me Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), here is what O’Rourke said on Kante’s potential move to Liverpool over the summer transfer window:
“It’s a deal they’ve looked at, hoping that they can maybe persuade Kante to leave Chelsea on a free transfer.
“We all know about Liverpool’s need for midfield reinforcements. It looks like it’s going to be a big rebuild job in that engine room for Jurgen Klopp’s side and Kante, with his experience and know-how, is a winner.
“Wherever he’s been, he’s had great success. To get someone like that on a free transfer would be an astute piece of business.”
Kante is a proven winner, having won several major titles with Chelsea and Leicester City. He is also a World Cup winner with France and has been named the Premier League Player of the Season in the past. His ability to break up play, win tackles and interceptions, and distribute the ball with precision certainly make him a complete midfielder.
While the former Leicester man’s age may be a concern, Liverpool could benefit from his experience and leadership on the pitch. His presence would also allow Klopp to rotate his midfield options, ensuring that Liverpool maintains its high standards throughout the season.
However, signing Kante would not be without its challenges. The midfielder’s wage demands could be a stumbling block, given Liverpool’s spending habits. The Frenchman is one of the highest-earning players at the Stamford Bridge club and that could be a hindrance.
Moreover, Chelsea is unlikely to let go of Kante easily as we see them trying to negotiate a deal with the player to fend off interest from other clubs and secure Kante for themselves as well. In any case, even though he is a soon-to-be free agent, the transfer situation isn’t simple by any means.
While signing him may not be easy, Kante’s experience and quality would be a valuable addition to Liverpool’s midfield. Klopp should consider him as a potential target, but the club needs to weigh the financial implications before making a move. The one positive aspect from this is the fact that the Reds are apparently showing a little bit of urgency in signing a midfielder which is a good thing.
