Transfer News: Liverpool eye Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Max Kilman

Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention towards Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Max Kilman after missing out on the signing of Benoit Badiashile (h/t Liverpool Echo). It is no secret that the Reds have been in the market for a centre-back for some time now, and this latest development only underlines the need for reinforcements in that area.

Writing exclusively in his Caught Offside column, Ben Jacobs wrote about how the Reds target the 25-year-old centre-back. Kilman has been one of the standout performers for Wolves this season, impressing with his reading of the game, physicality, and composure on the ball.

“I am also told Liverpool, like Spurs, would consider Wolves’ Max Kilman. You could make an argument Liverpool need a left and right-sided centre-back even if both don’t play instantly together as a new first-choice pairing in 2023/24.”

Liverpool’s defensive problems this season have been well-documented. Injuries to key players and inconsistent performances from the likes of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have certainly put the club in a situation where they have to dip into the market for a new centre-back.

While Kilman may not be a household name, his potential and ability have not gone unnoticed by Liverpool scouts. The fact that the Reds “really liked” Benoit Badiashile, who has since moved to Chelsea, suggests that they are actively looking for a new centre-back to strengthen their squad.

Kilman to the Reds?

Liverpool’s success in recent years has stood on a solid defence, and the club knows that they obviously need to invest in that area if they are to continue to compete at the highest level. Kilman may not be the most high-profile signing, but he could certainly prove to be a shrewd one if he can replicate his Wolves form at Anfield.

With Virgil van Dijk turning 32 this year, Liverpool need to start planning for the future and bringing in younger talent to replace their ageing stars. Kilman, at 25 could be just the player they need to shore up their defence and provide some much-needed competition for places.

Moreover, the addition of Kilman to Liverpool’s squad would not only provide much-needed depth to their defensive ranks but also add to their overall tactical flexibility. His ability to play at left-back could allow Klopp to experiment with a three-man defence or even a wing-back system, giving the Reds an extra dimension in attack.

Furthermore, his ability to play on the right side of the defence, despite being left-footed, indicates his considerable flexibility in that aspect.

However, only time will tell if Wolverhampton Wanderers would be willing to part ways with Kilman, who has become an integral part of their defence this season. It could take a sizable transfer fee to convince Wolves to sell, and Liverpool may face competition from other top clubs who are also looking for defensive reinforcements.
