Following the departure of forward mainstay Sadio Mane over the summer and the impending departure of Roberto Firmino this summer, Liverpool will oversee a completely new frontline apart from Mohamed Salah. The arrival of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo will oversee a new attack for the Reds in the foreseeable future.
It was refreshing to see two of our three new boys get on the scoresheet and that too twice against an in-form Manchester United squad. It was certainly a great win for the Reds as we smashed seven past them on the night with Mo getting a brace as well.
After the thumping victory, Gakpo had a word with the club’s official website and spoke about what the manager expects of him in his role in the Reds’ attack. He joined the Reds after his successful campaign in the World Cup under the captaincy of Virgil van Dijk and a fee of £35m followed.
Speaking to the club’s official website, here is what Gakpo had to say about his role in the Reds’ new-look attack:
“Obviously it’s a new front three, except for Mo, so in the beginning it’s always a little bit difficult to find each other because the [previous] three – Sadio, Bobby and Mo – were really used to playing with each other.”
“Then it’s a new formation, you have time to adapt and I think we are getting there. We just have to keep improving, keep going, keep working hard and then it will be alright.”
Gakpo’s arrival has come at the perfect time. The young Dutchman’s pace and dribbling ability will help to stretch opposition defences, providing more space and also opportunities for Liverpool’s other attackers. Furthermore, his clinical finishing will add a new dimension to Liverpool’s attacking play, making them even more dangerous in front of goal.
Gakpo’s arrival has also been welcomed by the Liverpool faithful, who are excited to see what the young forward can bring to the team. His performances for PSV earlier this season had been nothing short of sensational, and his ability to take on defenders and create scoring opportunities has made him a fan favourite in Eindhoven.
Liverpool fans will be hoping that Gakpo can replicate his form in the Premier League in the games to come and help to take the club’s attack to new heights. So far, in 12 appearances this season for the Reds, he has four goals and would be eager to add to this number.
Gakpo’s arrival has certainly come at the perfect time for Liverpool, with the club set to lose their star forward, Roberto Firmino at the end of the season. Hopefully, Gakpo can emulate the success and reach greater heights.
The Liverpool supporters will have high expectations for Gakpo to quickly adapt and certainly contribute towards the club’s ongoing achievements in the Premier League and beyond too.
