Virgil van Dijk on the influence of Mohamed Salah and his goal-scoring record for Liverpool
As quoted by Guardian, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has stated the influence Mohamed Salah has had in the team after the Egyptian broke the goal-scoring record.
With his brace against Manchester United, Salah became the club’s leading scorer in the Premier League, going past Robbie Fowler (also known as the God in these parts).
After a slow first half of the season, the 31-year-old is slowly returning to his best in the past few weeks, which cannot be good news for the upcoming opposition.
Here’s what van Dijk on the importance of Salah in the team, his record and more (h/t Guardian):
“Mo showed why he is so important for this football club, definitely.
“He’s been very influential with everything positive over the last couple of years and hopefully he can keep that going.
“For him to be the all-time Premier League top scorer for Liverpool is something no one should take for granted. He definitely shouldn’t and I won’t. He should not just brush it off because it’s something special.”
Salah is someone who will be talked about as one of the greats of the Premier League in the coming century. His influence not only transcends around Liverpool but circulates around the Arab world and how he has become a worldwide superstar while at Anfield.
Coming back to the performance against United, the Egyptian was simply superb. Along with the two goals, he assisted two goals, the first being the standout for Cody Gakpo after sitting down Lisandro Martinez.
It is now five league games without a goal conceded for Liverpool, four of them started by van Dijk. His influence at the back cannot be understated too since returning from a hamstring injury.
With all the pieces finally seeming to be in place, Jurgen Klopp’s men would be aiming to finish this season on a high. Finishing fourth in the league could be paramount to what happens in the summer transfer window while making it tough for Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League tie would be on their agenda as well.
