Liverpool owner John W. Henry says FSG will ‘invest wisely’ in the squad

Liverpool owner John W. Henry insists that the club will “spend wisely” in the squad

In an exclusive interview with Liverpool Echo (h/t Guardian), the Principal owner of Liverpool John W. Henry insisted on his commitment to the club and claims that they will “spend wisely” to improve the squad.

Back in November, it was claimed that Fenway Sports Group, headed by Henry, is intending to fully sell Liverpool. In the past few days, he has nipped that in the bud and reiterated that they are looking for investors to feed money to the club.

Speaking in the latest interview, Henry repeated that and affirmed his stance of commitment to Liverpool (h/t Guardian):

“While we formalised a process that has identified potential investors for the club, we remain fully committed to the long-term success of the club.

“That has been the case since day one in 2010. Our efforts every day have been and continue to be focused on the long-term health and competitiveness of the club.

“Investment in the club is never for the short term. This approach has been successful over the long haul with patience necessary from time to time. We’ve seen many football clubs go down unsustainable paths. We have and will continue to focus our attention on investing wisely in the transfer market and we remain incredibly proud of our squad.”

Given the current state of the Liverpool squad, especially in the midfield department, it is clear that big money needs to be spent to overhaul that in the coming summer.

If we only look at one of the primary targets of the club – Jude Bellingham, he is expected to cost over £100m at the least. And we know Jurgen Klopp could do with three midfield signings.

In the centre-back department, Joel Matip is expected to be sold in the summer. Hence, they would need a younger replacement for the Cameroonian star to help the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

While what Henry said makes sense and is nothing new in the current tone, it would be ideal if the investor is ready with the money before the start of the summer window. Klopp should get clarity on the budget allocated for the potential reshuffle.

We can only hope that these conversations, which are meant to be confidential, are taking place behind the scenes. The fans are waiting for things to happen in the transfer market. If the owners fail to provide the funds, not many would like them to stay.

More Liverpool News:

They speak about long-term success, but the squad’s midfield is a glaring reminder of a lack of investment in a key area of the pitch. Long-term success also means sustained time at the top, which we can’t manage if the team isn’t supplemented with world-class quality every now and then.

We have managed to strengthen our attack and transition it to a new era, but a similar thing is yet to happen in midfield. How we manage this situation in the summer could decide how FSG are viewed within the fanbase.
