Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a potential move for Ajax Amsterdam defender Jurrien Timber, as they look to strengthen their backline in the upcoming transfer window. The 21-year-old stood previously linked with a move to Manchester United as well.
But the latest reports from 90min via Liverpool Echo suggest that the Red Devils may face competition from Liverpool, as well as Tottenham Hotspur, for the talented young defender. With Liverpool struggling defensively this season due to a string of injuries to key players, the addition of Timber could provide some much-needed depth and stability to their backline.
The Dutchman has impressed for Ajax this season, establishing himself as a regular starter in the Eredivisie and making several appearances in the Champions League as well. He has made 35
appearances for his club across all competitions this season.Despite being just 21 years old, Timber has already earned comparisons to former Ajax and Barcelona defender Frank de Boer for his composure on the ball and his ability to read the game. His contract at the Dutch giants expires in 2025 (Transfermarkt)
He is also versatile enough to play both as a centre-back and as a right-back, which could prove useful for Liverpool given their injury woes this season. Of course, Liverpool will face stiff competition for Timber’s signature, with Manchester United reportedly still interested in the young defender.
However, given Liverpool’s recent success in the transfer market, as well as their reputation as one of the top clubs in Europe, adding to the recent 7-0 beating United received at Anfield, they could well be in with a chance of securing his services.
Should Timber join Liverpool, he would become the latest in a long line of talented young players to arrive at Anfield in recent years. The likes of Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz are now very integral to how the Reds play.
Obviously, the Dutch connection with Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo in the squad adding to Pep Lijnders in the coaching department could help oversee a move for the young talented defender.
Ultimately, the decision will be up to Timber himself, as well as Ajax, who will no doubt be reluctant to lose one of their brightest young talents. But if Liverpool can persuade him to make the move to Anfield, it could prove to be a shrewd piece of business for the club.
