According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool’s midfield target Matheus Nunes might see his price tag drop should Wolverhampton Wanderers be relegated from the Premier League this season.
Nunes has been linked with a move to the Reds for quite some time now. The Portuguese midfielder has been identified as a possible reinforcement in midfield but Wolves have been holding out for a fee in excess of £ 50 million.
However, the situation might be about to change should Julen Lopetuigi’s side suffer the drop from top-flight this campaign. Wolves sit three points clear of the relegation spot in what is turning out to be a very congested battle.
It is being claimed that should they somehow suffer the drop, Nunes’ price could drop from the aforementioned fee to somewhere between £30m and £40m. This would be an ideal scenario for the Reds.
Matheus Nunes, if we sign him, would be an excellent piece of business from Liverpool. The midfielder has been a standout player for Wolves this campaign and his ability to control the game from midfield is a joy to watch.
Although he might not be the most prolific goalscorer or assisted as evidenced by the solitary assist in 29 appearances, Nunes offers much more. Capable of playing anywhere in midfield, Nunes is a very composed presence.
Liverpool’s midfield has been crying out for creativity and control this season. The latter is offered to us by Thiago Alcantara but the Spaniard is too injury prone for us to trust him going forward.
Whilst Nunes might not be able to solve the creativity problems, what he can do is offer a lot of control in midfield. It’ll not be too different to the role he has been playing at Wolves and he could fit in seamlessly.
For the creativity quotient, we could look at someone like Jude Bellingham. The English international has really improved his productivity this campaign and he’d be a great player to pair with Nunes going forward.
