Liverpool identify AS Monaco’s Paul Mitchell as an ideal successor to Julian Ward
According to the Independent, Liverpool have identified AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell as the man to succeed Julian Ward for the senior role at Anfield.
After taking over the reins from Michael Edwards last summer, Ward submitted his resignation in November 2022. He will work till the end of this season before parting ways with the club.
That news came as a surprise and a shock for many at Liverpool, including boss Jurgen Klopp. Whether it was a sign of the major overhaul at the club or just a broken relationship, we never know.
Mitchell, on the other hand, will be spoken to in the coming weeks to potentially offer him the sporting director role. If he does join the Reds, his first summer won’t be an easy one, as the club is looking to bolster a few areas of the team with clever signings.
The former Wigan Athletic player is a subject of interest from INEOS – who are one of the bidders to take over Manchester United. If they are successful in doing the first bit right, Mitchell would be on their radar to take that director role.
Having got quite a lot to do in such a short space of time, Liverpool have to make sure they make appointments and player signings right before the start of next season.
The stability in the backroom department is as important for the greater performance of the team as anything in the front end.

Having a stabile and knowledgeable director like Mitchell at the helm would be a blessing for the club. Klopp will of course have a say, but the Monaco guy, who is set to leave the French club in the summer, is one of the best at his job.
