Liverpool show interest in Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Edson Alvarez
According to Ben Jacobs in his exclusively weekly column for CaughtOffside, Liverpool are among the few clubs showing interest in Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez. With a number of key players ageing and approaching the end of their careers, it’s essential for Liverpool to invest in young talent to ensure continued success in the future.
Alvarez has established himself as a key player for Ajax since joining the club in 2019, impressing with his energy, tackling ability and range of passing. At just 25 years of age, he could come in as a perfect fit for Liverpool’s plans to build a new-look midfield that could dominate games and provide a solid foundation for the team’s attack.
The Reds’ current midfield options include Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, and Naby Keita, but with Henderson and Milner both in their thirties, it’s clear that Liverpool needs to look to the future. Keita has struggled with injuries and failed to live up to expectations since joining the Reds in 2018.
Liverpool’s interest in Alvarez suggests that they are looking for a dynamic midfielder who can help to drive the team forward and provide a physical presence in the middle of the park. The Mexican international has impressed with his work rate and tenacity, traits that would be valued by Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff.
Alvarez to the Reds?
Of course, signing Alvarez won’t be easy, as Ajax are likely to demand a substantial transfer fee for one of their most prized assets who has a contract at the club until 2025 (Transfermarkt).
But Liverpool have shown in the past that they are willing to invest in young talent, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez both coming through the ranks to become key players in the first team.
Alvarez would also bring versatility to Liverpool’s midfield, having played in a range of positions for Ajax, including centre-back alongside his natural role of a defensive midfielder. This could be useful for Klopp, who needs a lot of versatility in his squad.
It’s clear that Liverpool obviously need to reinvest in their midfield if they are to continue to compete at the highest level. The addition of Alvarez would certainly be a step in the right direction, providing the team with a young, dynamic midfielder who has the potential to become a star in the Premier League.
