Gabby Agbonlahor backs Liverpool to hand veteran James Milner a new contract
Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor gives his thoughts on whether James Milner should get a new contract at Anfield. The 37-year-old has been a valuable member of the Liverpool squad since joining the club from Manchester City in 2015, and his versatility and experience have made him a valuable asset for manager Jurgen Klopp.
Speaking to the Football Insider exclusively, Agbonlahor expressed his belief that Milner should get a new deal. The veteran midfielder’s ability to play in multiple positions and his wealth of experience obviously make him a valuable member of the squad.
In 321 appearances for the club across all competitions, Milly has 26 goals and 46 assists to his name. Apart from goalkeeper and centre-back, Milner has played all possible positions for the club and that is enough to show the dedication levels of the Leeds United academy graduate.
Here is what Agbonlahor told Football Insider:
“Milner is definitely one to keep around the squad. He won’t be moaning about not getting game time, he knows his role.”
“I think if you’re Klopp you definitely give him a new deal. Not many have got more experience than him, and he can play in multiple positions if needed as well.”
Does Milner deserve a new deal?
Agbonlahor’s sentiments for a change stand echoed by many other pundits as well, who believe that Milner’s contributions to the club go far beyond his performances on the pitch. Milly’s work ethic, leadership, and professionalism have certainly made him a respected figure in the Liverpool dressing room.
Milner has been a regular feature for Liverpool this season and his influence on the team cannot stand overstated. Whether he is playing as a central midfielder, full-back, or even a makeshift winger as we saw in the early days of the Klopp era, Milner always gives his all for the team.
In addition to his on-field contributions, Milner has also been a positive influence off the pitch, serving as a mentor to younger players and leading by example with his professionalism and dedication. As Liverpool looks to build for the future, having a player like Milner in the squad can obviously, only be a good thing.
While some may question the decision of offering a new contract to a player in his late thirties, it is clear that Milner’s contributions to Liverpool go far beyond his age or playing time.
