Darwin Nunez expected to be fit for the Manchester City clash
According to Neil Jones of Goal (h/t Liverpool.com), Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is expected to be fit when the Reds take on Manchester City away at the Etihad this Saturday.
The Uruguayan, who was in great form before the international break, pulled out of the national team squad because he suffered a cut on his ankle during the second leg of the Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
Nunez being fit would be a big boost for Jurgen Klopp as he has slowly started to get the best out of him on the left-hand side of the attack.
While Luis Diaz being back in training is good news, the Colombian has been out for five months. So, he won’t be thrown into the mix straight away. Hence, Nunez’s fitness was key ahead of the City game.
Despite becoming a national joke for some reason (mostly from the salty rivals), the 23-year-old has got 14 goals and four assists to his name in 33 appearances in all competitions for the Reds in his first season.
Against the high line of City, Nunez’s pace and directness on the ball could be a key factor in determining whether Liverpool win the game or not. He may still be honing his skills when it comes to finishing and decision making but he is always in and around the box, making things happen.
With Mohamed Salah on the other side and Cody Gakpo in the middle, the new front three is gradually taking shape. It will take some time though but structurally it looks okay with Gakpo honing in on the false nine role that was expertly played by Roberto Firmino before.

Amidst all the positivity, the negative is that Thiago Alcantara remains out as he is undergoing a personal programme following a hip complaint. His absence along with Stefan Bajcetic leaves a big hole in the midfield. Let’s hope the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho step up.
