Newcastle United are interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Football agent Haydn Dodge has confirmed a long-term interest from Newcastle United in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez (via Caught Offside, h/t Metro).

The Magpies would be willing to make a move in the summer if the player is looking to try out a new club in the near future.

Before the start of this season, Gomez signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool. His current deal at Anfield takes him until the summer of 2027 (Transfermarkt). So, if the Reds sell him now, they would ask for a lot of money.

Despite a recent lull in form, the England international is an exceptional young defender with a fantastic future. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk was vital behind Liverpool’s title success in 2019/20.

He has won everything in club football at Liverpool and looks good to do well for the coming five to six years at the least, provided injuries don’t curtail his progress again.

Gomez has been unlucky with some bad injuries during his time at Anfield. That could be one of the main reasons why he is not fully confident at the moment. Maybe he is taking time to trust his body to go that extra yard.

Will the change in scenery do any good to him? One would doubt so. Under Jurgen Klopp at one of the biggest clubs in the world, the 25-year-old has everything to go again in the summer and fight for his position next season after losing it to Ibrahima Konate now.

Given that he can play at right-back and do a reasonably good job, Gomez is an important asset for the squad. There is no point selling him in the summer unless his head is turned by Newcastle.
