Liverpool are interested in Sporting defender Jeremiah St. Juste
According to Record (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested and could potentially consider a move for Sporting CP defender Jeremiah St. Juste.
The 26-year-old, who arrived in Portugal from Mainz last summer itself, caught the eye with impressive performances against Arsenal in the two-legged Europa League last-16 tie.
Liverpool have the former Netherlands U21 international on their agenda now ahead of the crucial summer transfer window.
St. Juste can play in multiple positions across the back-line. Although his preferred position is in central defence, he is comfortable operating as a right-back or a defensive midfielder.
There have been reports that the Reds could part ways with Joel Matip in the summer. The former Cameroon international’s contract at Anfield expires in 2024. So, if there is no contract renewal in sight, it would be sensible to sell him now.
If Matip is gone, there will be a space for a foreign defender to come and challenge for multiple spots in the back-line.
Knowing that St. Juste can play as a right-back, he would be a great addition. The Dutchman can be a great option for Jurgen Klopp as a backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold when required. He has the talent to fight for a place in central defence too.
But, having only signed him last summer, will Sporting let go of the player after one season? If they will, will the price tag be out of Liverpool’s reach? We do not know any of that yet. The report also indicated that the Portuguese side have no interest in parting ways with the player.
