Pep Guardiola reveals what he told Liverpool substitutes after Manchester City equalized against the Reds

Liverpool FC’s recent 4-1 loss to Manchester City was a significant setback for the club, with their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League taking a hit. The defeat left the Reds languishing in eighth place on the table, with only a handful of games remaining in the season. However, the way Pep Guardiola celebrated during the match really seemed to rankle with the Liverpool faithful.

His exuberant celebrations during Julian Alvarez’s equaliser seemed to irk the Liverpool fans and players alike. The Spaniard celebrated right in front of substitute Kostas Tsimikas, then attempted to lighten the mood by joking with Arthur Melo, shaking Melo’s hand as the pair returned to the bench. However, this only served to inflame the situation, with many feeling that Guardiola was being disrespectful.

When asked by reporters about his actions after the match, Guardiola became visibly irritated. He defended his actions, stating that he was merely celebrating a goal and trying to lighten the mood with a bit of humour. He also challenged the accusations of disrespect, insisting that he had not intended to cause offence.

Here is what he had to say about the same via ECHO:

“I was happy and I said, ‘How nice was our goal?’ That’s all. Of course (it was an attempt at humour). Come on. No, come on. I am so sorry. I speak with Tsimikas. You people say it is a lack of respect.

“Ask him if I lack respect. I celebrate a goal. Normally I celebrate with my son on the floor. I come here and said, ‘The goal was nice, wasn’t it? That’s all. I’m so sorry. You think it was a lack of respect? Ah okay, sorry. I’m so sorry.”

What next for the Reds?

Despite Guardiola’s protestations, many Liverpool fans and players remain unhappy with his behaviour during the match. The fact that the Reds are now struggling to secure a top-four finish only adds to the sense of disappointment and frustration felt by the club’s supporters.

For Liverpool, this latest setback only serves to highlight the need for improvement in key areas of the squad. With the season drawing to a close, the Reds will need to dig deep and find a way to secure a strong finish to the campaign. This will require both mental and physical strength, as well as a willingness to take risks and make bold decisions.

In particular, Liverpool will need to focus on improving their defence if they are to mount a serious challenge for a top-four finish. The team has struggled with injuries and inconsistency at the back this season, and this has cost them dearly in terms of points dropped.

With the right approach and a bit of luck, the Reds could yet secure a top-four finish and salvage something from what has been a difficult season.
