Liverpool eye move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher
As reported by The Independent via The Mirror, Liverpool eye a move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher. The 23-year-old central midfielder could head out of Stamford Bridge given the Financial Fair Play (FFP) implications that could take their course putting Chelsea in an uncomfortable position.
It is obviously no secret that Chelsea need to balance their books and offload some of their players to meet FFP requirements. The Blues’ extravagant spending since Todd Boehly’s consortium took over the club has left them in a precarious financial position. Gallagher is one of the players who could be available for transfer this summer, and Klopp apparently sees him as a potential solution to Liverpool’s midfield problems.
Gallagher’s performances on loan at Crystal Palace last season were great. The 23-year-old had been a standout player for the Eagles, showcasing his energy, dynamism and work rate in the heart of the midfield. These are attributes that Klopp feels would certainly be a valuable addition to his team. This season as well, in 33 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, he has a goal and an assist.
Liverpool’s midfield has been an area of concern this season, with injuries to key players and inconsistent performances leaving Klopp short of options. The addition of Gallagher would provide much-needed depth and competition for places in the team. Moreover, with Liverpool in a state of transition, bringing in young players with loads of potential to improve should stand as a priority for Klopp.
Another Chelsea man on the way to the Reds?
His performances earned him a call-up to the England squad, and he has since made six appearances for the Three Lions. Gallagher’s progress has not gone unnoticed by Klopp, who believes he could thrive at Liverpool.
Klopp has obviously shown a willingness to give young players a chance in the first team, and Gallagher would have the opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the world at Liverpool. With this speculation of Gallagher being a target for Liverpool making the rounds, he joins Chelsea mate Mason Mount in having links with the Reds.
Liverpool will certainly need to add depth to their squad and bring in players who can make an impact. Gallagher fits the bill in this regard, and his energy and tenacity would be a valuable asset to Klopp’s team.
With Liverpool looking to rebuild after a disappointing season, signing Gallagher or any other young midfielder for that matter, would be a step in the right direction for Klopp and Co.
