Liverpool ‘unwilling’ to trigger £88 million release clause of SL Benfica defender Antonio Silva

Liverpool are ‘unwilling’ to trigger the £88 million release clause in the contract of SL Benfica defender Antonio Silva, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola (h/t Mirror).

The Reds are interested in the 19-year-old. Jurgen Klopp is also a big fan of his. However, the Anfield side will not splash the cash to acquire the youngster’s services in the upcoming transfer window.

Benfica are notorious for not budging on their price tag. As such, the Primeira Liga outfit will not part ways with the centre-back unless they receive his buyout clause.

The Eagles are flying high at the moment. Roger Schmidt’s team are at the top of the league table, having lost only one game. On the other hand, the Lisbon-based club are also in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will face Inter Milan.

Silva has broken onto the scene in the current campaign. The defender made his way through the youth ranks at the Primeira Liga outfit and has now cemented his place in the starting lineup.

The youngster has also become a full Portugal international after some impressive displays for the Eagles over the last few months. He has made 35 appearances in all competitions for Schmidt’s team in the current campaign, scoring four goals.

Liverpool have been underwhelming this season. Our backline has especially let us down on a number of occasions. The ever-reliable Virgil van Dijk has looked shaky defensively.

Apart from the Holland international, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have struggled as well. Ibrahima Konate has had a few fitness issues in the current campaign and has been on the sidelines for a considerable period.

Klopp also has Nat Phillips at his disposal. But while he has been a great servant, it is time for the 26-year-old to move on. We evidently need fresh blood in the backline. But will the Reds change their stance on Silva? Only time will tell.
