Liverpool star Harvey Elliott shares comment that inspired injury comeback
Liverpool star Harvey Elliott opened up about the difficult road to recovery from his serious ankle injury in September 2021. The 18-year-old had become a surprise inclusion in Jurgen Klopp and his midfield, impressing with his performances before the unfortunate injury and even on loan in the previous season at Blackburn Rovers.
Elliott suffered a fracture and dislocation of his ankle in a home win against Leeds United, leading to surgery and a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Despite initial scans revealing a rehab period of about six months, Elliott stood determined to make a return as soon as possible.
After months of hard work and rehabilitation, Elliott made his comeback in February 2022 during the FA Cup clash against Cardiff City. Scoring his first goal for the club he had supported since childhood made the occasion all the more special.
Speaking on the We Are Liverpool podcast about recovering from his ankle injury and a specific social media comment that somewhat ‘ignited the fire’, here is what he said:
“As hard as it is to stay off, you still see these things. For me, it was very tough, but it kind of kept me going trying to prove people wrong. There was one comment that stuck by me from the start of my rehab to when I scored against Cardiff and it said: ‘you’ll never walk again’.
“I thought I’m going to take that and run with it and come back. The way I came back was all a dream come true for me.”
Elliott for the Reds
He was determined to prove the doubters wrong, and he did just that. Elliott’s journey back to full fitness was nothing short of a dream coming true for the young midfielder, who credits his positive mindset for helping him get through the tough times. He remained focused on his goal and worked tirelessly to make a comeback earlier than expected.
Despite his age, Elliott has already shown great maturity and determination, and his comeback from injury is a testament to his character. Liverpool fans will no doubt be excited to see what the future holds for the talented midfielder.
In 41 appearances across all competitions this season, he has five goals and two assists. Until the Chelsea league fixture away from home, he featured in all of the Reds’ games in the season.
Jurgen Klopp has always had faith in his young players, and Elliott’s recovery and comeback only serve to highlight the manager’s commitment to developing talent at the club. The Reds will no doubt be hoping that Elliott can continue to make an impact in the seasons to come.
