“It’s up to us”- Cody Gakpo happy with Liverpool’s draw against Arsenal

Cody Gakpo believes the comeback against Arsenal has set the temperature for Liverpool

As quoted by Liverpool Echo (from Voetbal Primeur), Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo believes the two-goal comeback against Arsenal has set the temperature for the remainder of this season.

After making a horrendous start on Sunday and giving two goals away to the league leaders, the Reds scored late in the first and second half to finish the game equal on the scoreline.

On the basis of the start they made, a point against an in-form Arsenal would not have been bad, but with the way Liverpool played in the second half, they would have been disappointed not to take all three points.

Happy with the comeback and how it has set the tone, here’s what Gakpo said (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“This is a step in the right direction. Now it’s up to us to continue with this.

“We have to keep up the intensity and make sure we get even more points. We have to play every game like the second half against Arsenal. You can’t start anything without faith. Certainly, I believe in it (European qualification). We all still believe in it and that is our goal.”

If we look at the table, this was two points dropped for Jurgen Klopp’s men in their quest for finishing fourth. Manchester United and Newcastle United, who are on the same number of points and occupying the fourth and third place respectively, are now 13 points ahead of the Reds with nine games to play.

Although a lot can happen in the latter stages of the season with every team fighting for their targets, it seems unlikely that Liverpool can reel that gap in even if they win the remaining nine games (which itself is a near-impossible task).

Let’s just hope that the team now knows what it took for them to become a great team in the past. The second half against Arsenal was vintage Liverpool of the last four seasons.

More Liverpool News:

If we can carry that on for the remainder of this campaign, at least an otherwise weird and underwhelming season would be ending respectability. Up next is the away game against Leeds United. The Yorkshire-based side beat us at Anfield back in October. Giving one back would be nice.
