Florian Plettenberg explains why Liverpool pulled out of the race for Jude Bellingham

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg took to Twitter to explain why Liverpool saw themselves out of the race for Borussia Dortmund’s 19-year-old midfielder Jude Bellingham. Until now, the former Birmingham City man, until now, was an ever-present on the Reds’ transfer list since his move to the Bundesliga in 2020.

Apparently, the interest of Manchester City and Real Madrid inflated the price a tad bit too much for Liverpool’s liking. The player stood bound to cost the Reds a fortune and a half, but the presence of these two sides in the race for Bellingham further caused an increase in the price.

Liverpool’s owners, FSG, felt that the total package including the transfer fee and his wages was too much for a 19-year-old and that is primarily why the Reds, spearheaded by John W. Henry, pulled out of the race to sign Bellingham.

While the owners would want to believe that they’ve taken this decision after a lot of thought, that certainly isn’t the fans’ perspective on the same. No major transfer decision for over three transfer windows in hope of getting Bellingham, one would certainly expect the Reds to go all in. To know that the Reds won’t pursue him is certainly a huge disappointment.

What next for the Reds?

If FSG believes that the fees were too high for his age, it is important to note that his current performance is of a high standard and holds potential for further improvement. The player has a promising future ahead of him and has the potential to remain at the top of his game for at least the next few years.

Plus it was always known that the player would cost a lot, so this argument sounds a little foundation-less. While the Reds have no other option but to look for alternatives, it is important they spend the money on the right players and trust the project Jurgen Klopp has for the squad.

It is true that the current season has been extremely disappointing and Klopp has to take a major chunk of the blame for it, there is no doubt that he is a world-class manager and the Reds would find a way with him at the helm.

The Reds could also look to divert the investment in mind for Bellingham into buying more than just one midfielder. In any case, the need for midfielders at Liverpool Football Club certainly doesn’t go down one notch.

Right now, the focus should solely be on securing UCL football for next season. The idea of not playing in the top tier of Europe is certainly not something the fans and the management of the club would like.
