Trent Alexander-Arnold on how he communicates with Darwin Nunez
As quoted by Liverpool Echo, Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold reveals how the language barrier is no issue when communicating with Darwin Nunez.
Nunez, the Uruguayan national, would be fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, while Alexander-Arnold is a local player who speaks English and ‘Scouse English’.
But, these things are no barriers these days. Every club has players from different continents and they eventually find a way to get their messages across to the other person in an effective manner.
Alexander-Arnold has found one and reveals what it is (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“I know a little bit of Spanish from school, so I am able to speak a little bit and he is learning English, which is good. We probably sort of speak part of a sentence in English and then maybe a word he doesn’t know he’ll say in Spanish and hope that I know what it means and then we’ll carry on in English.
“So it’s getting there and it’s the same with most of the lads that come in and don’t speak English. We speak the language of football. That’s all that matters and Darwin is a really exciting player to play with. We all enjoy playing with him and we’re still getting to know him, how he plays and moves, but it’s exciting because he adds a lot to our team.”
It is good to know that Nunez is learning English. Although speaking your mother tongue is great, it is better to learn the language of the country where you are plying your trade in. What it would do is help in better communication with the local players and the coaching staff.
Looking at how confident the former Benfica man is, one may not think that the language barrier has hindered him one bit in his time in England thus far.
Despite this being his first season for Liverpool where things have not been easy for him and the team, the 23-year-old has amassed 14 goals and four assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.
We must expect things to get easier for Nunez next season. We tend to forget that he is still a young player who still has a long way to go in his professional career. If he uses this season as a learning curve, it won’t be surprising to see him fly in the next few years.

It has been a tough season for Alexander-Arnold as well after four very good years. He might be looking forward to having a normal summer pre-season before getting back to his level next season.
