Speaking to Walk On Magazine (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara reveals that he is jealous of the running power possessed by teammate Darwin Nunez.
The Spaniard also explained the technicalities of his game and how he effectively uses the no-look pass while playing the game at a higher tempo.
Coming back to Nunez, although the Uruguayan has been a bit erratic in his game since signing for Liverpool last summer, his numbers and the impact he has on the team are on the positive curve.
Talking about the 23-year-old’s running power and explaining his game, here’s Thiago (h/t Liverpool Echo
):“For the best players in the world – and I don’t have this – it is about trying to score 40 goals a season. I say to Darwin (Nunez), I never have had the feeling in my life to shoot the ball 30 metres in front of me and say I will win this race to get it. I feel jealous sometimes of that, for sure. But this is life, we always want what we don’t have.
“It is a way to trick [his no-look passes] the other guys (opponents) so I can get the ball to my team-mates in a better position.
“You have to look at the ball to see whether it is close enough to make a proper pass. You also have to take a look before and if you see a body moving (in your peripheral vision) you can say ‘okay, I will do this pass’ because you’ve seen him (team-mate), you know exactly where he is. Then, for the no-look pass, you have to avoid putting your body or eyes where you want to put the ball.”
If we talk about Thiago, he is such a good player, isn’t he? It is a shame that the Spaniard gets a lot of injuries and cannot stay fit for the entirety of the season.
On his day, the 32-year-old can run a game on his own in the middle of the park. His passing, tackling, vision and the sheer quality he possesses in everything he does is just mesmerising.
Even in a cameo appearance against Arsenal on Sunday, Thiago showed what the Liverpool midfield missed in the last month or so.
He is also right about Nunez having the running power and speed to terrorise opposition defences. The Uruguayan needs to iron out his game though.
In terms of ability, he has everything. He can dribble, can play anywhere across the forward line, is physically and aerially strong and can shoot well. He just needs to stay sharp for a longer period of time in games to offer a sustained amount of threats to the opposition.
We hope that both Thiago and Nunez are fit for the remaining nine games of this season. Win them all and at least finish in the Europa League spots.
