Xherdan Shaqiri gives his verdict on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool rebuild

Xherdan Shaqiri backs Jurgen Klopp to turn Liverpool FC’s fortunes around

Former Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri has backed Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to turn things around at Anfield after an underwhelming season.

The Swiss international has labelled Klopp as a “big win” for Liverpool. He believes in the German’s ability to recapture the magic and turn the mood of the club around.

Although Shaqiri was a bit-part player at Liverpool, he played a massive part in one of the club’s greatest nights at Anfield – the second leg of the Champions League semi-final tie against Barcelona in 2019. He assisted the third and the aggregate-equalising goal that night.

Talking about Klopp and why he has faith in the boss, here’s what the current Chicago Fire forward said when interviewing with the Guardian:

“I believe in Jurgen. I hope he stays as long as possible. He’s a big win for the club. I think they’re going to be busy in the transfer market (this summer). But I think it is crucial they make the Champions League so that they can get the players they want.”

While we can agree with the things Shaqiri said, the last bit seems like an unreachable task at the moment. After claiming two points from the previous four league games following the thrashing of Manchester United, Liverpool are 12 points behind the Champions League places in the table.

So, although the Reds have to be active on the market, offering potential transfer targets a chance to play Europe’s prestigious competition next season is a fantasy-based idea.

Instead, what Klopp and his staff can do is pitch in a longer-term project to the players, which would consist of them getting back to playing Champions League football from the 2024/25 season onward.

More Liverpool News:

There isn’t much to play for in the remaining nine games. But, the team needs to start winning games to end this horror of a season on a positive note. We also hope that the club hierarchy is working hard to get the necessary transfer deals done as soon as the summer window begins.
