Jamie Carragher tells the Liverpool board to restore trust after Jude Bellingham debacle

In his latest article for the Telegraph, Jamie Carragher has asked the Liverpool board and Jurgen Klopp to restore the trust of the fans after the Jude Bellingham debacle.

Earlier this week, reports from multiple sources confirmed that the Reds have pulled out from the transfer race to sign Bellingham because they do not want to spend the majority of their majority on one player. They would rather want to spread that on signing multiple players.

After deciding to not spend much to bolster the midfield department last summer, Liverpool have left themselves in a situation where they must sign at least three midfielders in the coming transfer window.

Talking about restoring trust and more, here’s a snippet of the article by Carragher (h/t Telegraph):

“Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp built a level of trust with regards to transfers which was the envy of Europe.

“That trust has gone with news they will not be pursuing Jude Bellingham this summer. It must be won back in the next transfer window because Klopp, his recruitment team and owners Fenway Sports Group have been granted a free pass for the dire performances of the last eight months, especially away from home.

“Now, Liverpool have made it known they cannot afford Bellingham, after all. Naturally, there is anger and frustration from those who feel misled and confused.”

When the Liverpool hierarchy did not change things in 2021 and handed new deals to senior players like Jordan Henderson, the recruitment staff warned the club of the squad’s age going in a negative direction.

Ironically, Henderson’s form since signing that new deal has been below-par, to put it mildly. The greatness which the team almost achieved last season was because of how well Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho played in the midfield. This season, while the former has struggled with injuries, the latter has dropped off in form.

After a few years of very good work behind the scenes, the events in the last year or so are starting to put doubt among the Reds supporters.

For that reason, Carragher is right that they need to have a fantastic summer window to restore some of the lost faith. Can they do it? It looks difficult without Champions League qualification.
