Chelsea’s attempts at offering Mason Mount a new contract are not heading anywhere for the club as Liverpool accelerate their interest in the 24-year-old central midfielder. However, recent reports from GiveMeSport via ECHO talk about how Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is keen on keeping Mount at the club.
Journalist Simon Phillips spoke about how the Stamford Bridge outfit focuses on getting Mount back to his best form. The Blues recently saw themselves out of the UEFA Champions League as they lost 4-0 on aggregate to Real Madrid in the Quarter-Finals, following a 2-0 second-leg loss in London yesterday.
Mount’s presence in the game was limited as a substitute, but he was very effective in the few minutes of action he got on the pitch. Liverpool’s interest in the player now though, sees a roadblock in the form of Todd Boehly’s perseverance to keep the Cobham Academy Graduate close.
Here is what Phillips told GiveMeSport via ECHO on the Mount contract situation:
“But the talks will come and Chelsea are feeling a little bit more optimistic that the new set of terms that they’re going to put on the table will hopefully be accepted by Mason Mount.”
Moreover, recent reports from ECHO on Mount’s price tag discussed how Liverpool could get their player at about £70m or so. While a section of fans could see the price tag as a tad bit steep, Mount has proven himself in the Premier League added to the fact that he is already a UCL winner as well.
The versatile midfielder, who can play attacking midfield roles as well as central midfield in addition to playing wide midfield roles has 33 goals and 37 assists in 193 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea.
Getting on board a top-quality midfielder even though extremely crucial has probably gone down a bit in terms of how vital it could have been for Liverpool following the resurgence of Trent Alexander-Arnold in a newfound midfield role.
However, that indeed does not take away anything in the context of the importance of getting on board a few midfielders, and of Mount’s quality to the Reds as a number of players stand set to leave the club in the summer, and the Reds need to strengthen their squad in almost all departments.
While there are no doubts over how Mount could fit in at Liverpool, as he is a proper workhorse player almost fitting like a glove for a manager like Jurgen Klopp, Chelsea’s persistence could cause a problem for the Reds.
