According to Evening Standard, Chelsea and Mason Mount reopen contract talks to potentially extend his stay at the club and starve Liverpool off.
We all know that Liverpool are among the number of clubs interested in signing the England international, provided he does not sign a new deal with the Blues.
The 24-year-old’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer (Transfermarkt
). Todd Boehly and co. are looking to make him sign a new one or two-year deal that would give them the leverage to reject the attempts from Liverpool to sign him. However, the length of the contract and other details might not work in favour of the player. Although the price tag of £70m is placed on him, it might be negotiated down because along with Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United are also interested in signing the player.
Arsenal and Manchester City are in the frame, while German giants Bayern Munich would be willing to sign him if he becomes a free agent next summer.
It sounds like the Chelsea owner is desperate to do something to appease the fans after a season of disaster. Blues fans may want one of their own to stay, instead of playing for one of their direct rivals in the league.
But, if the offer is not right and the likes of Liverpool hand in something solid, it feels unlikely that the 24-year-old will stay put at Chelsea.
Mount is a versatile player who can play in central and attacking midfield. He can do a job in wide attacking areas as well. His technical quality married with an excellent work rate is something Jurgen Klopp would love to have.
Let’s hope that this new contract talk breaks down and we get a chance to negotiate a deal to sign the England international in the summer.
