“This role does not match my expectations”- Liverpool target says he is unhappy with playing time at Bundesliga club

Liverpool target Ryan Gravenberch opens up on his lack of playing time at Bayern Munich

Liverpool target Ryan Gravenberch has made it clear that he wants his situation at Bayern Munich to change with regard to playing time.

After making a move from Ajax to Munich last summer, the Dutch international has struggled for consistent game time. If we look at the numbers, the 20-year-old has only played 726 minutes of football in all competitions for the German champions, and we are approaching May.

A few days ago, the Times reported that Liverpool have accelerated their interest in signing Gravenberch. Talks have taken place with the player’s father, who happens to take care of his career. The price tag quoted was around £25m

Here’s what the Dutchman said when asked about his situation at Bayern (VI, h/t Mirror):

“In the beginning, of course, I had to get used to it here. A new environment. Everything goes so much faster, sometimes training sessions just felt like competitions. But I feel that getting used to it has been behind me for a while now.

“Training and playing at the top level for a year is beautiful and instructive. Although playing, it is mainly training.

“That has to change next season, then I really want to play weekly again. I haven’t spoken to the club management yet, so just wait and see what happens. But it is clear that this role does not match my expectations.”

It is a strong message from a young player who clearly wants to play football rather than warm the bench. Having seen how well he did for Ajax in the preceding two seasons, one can imagine that he is good enough to play more for Bayern than what he has done so far.

There is a transitional period going on in Bavaria, with Julian Nagelsmann sacked last month and Thomas Tuchel’s initial weeks going against the club’s plans (out of both cup competitions and now second in the league).

Liverpool are undergoing that under Jurgen Klopp as well. The midfield situation needs sorting, hence the talks with Gravenberch.

The Dutchman would add physical and technical strength, along with his versatility to play in multiple positions across the midfield.
