Liverpool eyeing a move for out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Daily Star reports that Liverpool are eyeing up a £35m move for out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the summer.

The Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is prioritising rejigging the midfield, and after being priced out of the Jude Bellingham move this summer, he is focusing on bringing Phillips to Anfield.

The report reveals that the England international understands that he will always second fiddle to Rodri at the heart of the City midfield. If he is to stake his claim in the national side for the Euros in 2024, he needs to make a move to Liverpool. He is open to doing that. West Ham United have also shown interest in him.

The 27-year-old moved to the Etihad last summer from Leeds United for a deal worth £60m. But, that transfer has not worked for both parties yet. He has only played a total of 406 minutes in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s team.

Phillips had to undergo a shoulder surgery

in September that ruled him out of action until the World Cup. Now, although he played for England in Qatar, his luck didn’t change at Manchester City.

Guardiola criticised him for being out of shape before rejoining the squad for training after the World Cup.

All things point towards the fact that it would be sensible for the 27-year-old to move elsewhere this summer. He is a talented defensive midfielder who can operate in a double pivot if required.

If he shows commitment and desire to do well for Liverpool, the club should sign him. The qualities are there. But, has the tough treatment from Guardiola swayed his interest away or made him more determined to do well? If it is the latter, he could be a superstar for us next season onward.
