Monaco are ready to sell Youssouf Fofana, who is linked with Liverpool
According to L’Equipe, via Inside Futbol (h/t Liverpool Echo), French side AS Monaco are looking to sell midfielder Youssouf Fofana, who is linked with Liverpool.
The report claims that the player is looking to move to a club that constantly features in the Champions League. His current contract at Monaco expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).
The French international was a youth player at Strasbourg before moving to Monaco in January 2020. He is a defensive midfielder, who can operate as a central midfielder or on the right-hand side of a flat four-man midfield.
The 24-year-old was a teammate of Aurelien Tchouameni in France, who was a transfer target for Liverpool last summer before Real Madrid came in and snapped him.
It is no secret that the Reds will be looking to rejig their midfield in the coming summer. After pulling out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham due to cost-related issues, the pressure is on the recruitment team to get the window right.
It would be interesting to know whether Jurgen Klopp has tweaked the type of midfielders he is after, following the recent change in the system that accommodates Trent Alexander-Arnold in a hybrid fullback-defensive midfielder role.
If he is looking for a solid defensive midfielder to help Fabinho manage his minutes, Fofana could be one of the options.
The 24-year-old is a physically strong presence in midfield with good passing range and excellent game-reading skills. He is not someone who would be a goal-scoring influence on the team, having done that only three times in 134 games for Monaco.

With his contract expiring next summer, Monaco may not be in a position to demand a high transfer fee. That could suit Liverpool’s conservative approach in the transfer market.
