Liverpool star welcomes the challenge brought by incoming summer recruits

Harvey Elliott welcomes the prospect of Liverpool signing players in the summer window

Young Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is not perturbed by the fact that the club would sign players in the summer window.

It is no secret that the Reds are looking to bolster their midfield department with a few signings in the coming transfer window. We will have a few outgoings there as well, with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contracts expiring at the end of this season.

Elliott, who has made 42 appearances for Liverpool this season, may get limited game-time if Jurgen Klopp and his staff add two or three top-quality midfielders in the summer.

However, the 20-year-old is not worrying about that and is welcoming the possibility of intense competition for places within the squad. Here’s what the youngster said (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“It’s nice (when the club sign new players). More competition drives you on to make sure you are the best, to work as hard as you possibly can in training and take your opportunity in games.

“Whoever comes in they will have unbelievable talent because it is a big club and it’s always going to be hard but you need to reflect on the situation, stay level-headed and wait for your opportunity, which is what I’ll be doing and I’ll be working as hard as I possibly can to show the manager and coaching staff I can play.”

With the new system that sees Trent Alexander-Arnold move into midfield when the team is in possession, the right-sided midfielder must be comfortable in going wide to stretch the pitch and also help the hybrid right-back out defensively in wide areas.

We know Elliott is a left-footed player who likes to come inside on his favoured foot on that side of the midfield. Hence, there might be a case for Klopp to put him on the left and ask him to play as a wide midfielder from there. On Trent’s side, a right-footed midfielder who is comfortable staying wide on his favoured foot could be the preferable choice.

While all of that is for the boss and his staff to decide, we hope that they do the right business this summer to bolster the midfield department.
