“Of course not”- Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool are not destined for top-four finish despite win vs Spurs

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will not finish in top-four despite win vs Tottenham Hotspur

Jurgen Klopp has vehemently ruled out that Liverpool will finish in the top-four this season despite their 4-3 Premier League win against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds came into this game knowing they will have to win all their games this season to even stand a remote chance at making the UEFA Champions League next season. They raced to a three-goal lead in the first 21 minutes.

Spurs scored thrice in succession with Richarlison’s goal coming in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. Diogo Jota

, nevertheless, scored Liverpool’s winner literally in the next play.

The win means Liverpool are fifth with 56 points from 33 games so far this season. Tottenham Hotspur have 54 from 34 games while Brighton & Hove Albion trail the Reds by four points but have two games in hand as compared to us.

Mind games

Manchester United and Newcastle United are the teams to target for us in the top-four positions. They both won their games this weekend to make our job even tougher.

The Red Devils have 63 points from 32 games while Newcastle United have 65 from 33 matches. It seems like a tall order for the Reds to shave such a big gap with just five games remaining in the season for us.

For Klopp, the Reds are not going to finish in the top four unless a miracle happens. He said after the win against Spurs, via BBC MOTD:

“Of course not. If United and Newcastle wins all the games then how can we get there? If they start losing them we are close. Until then we have to win football games to qualify for Europe at all.”

These are sly mind games from Klopp, to make Newcastle and Manchester United feel like they are odds-on to finish in the top four and anything apart from that will be a massive failure. Which it will be. The German tactician has responded well to put the pressure on.

Those on the Red half of Merseyside very well know Klopp would harbour hopes of a top-four finish.
