Jurgen Klopp: Alisson Becker was ‘close to crying’ after Liverpool clean sheet vs Fulham

Clean sheets have been rare for Liverpool and Alisson Becker. Before the game against Fulham, we were on a four-game winning run.

But we did not keep a clean sheet in any of those games. Defensive lapses, injuries, a tired midfield and a mixture of players from two different eras in Jurgen Klopp’s side have led to a situation where we aren’t the solidified defensive outfit we once were.

Finally, we managed one in the 1-0 win against Fulham, but it wasn’t without its struggles. Alisson, true to his form, made some immense, stupendous, points-saving saves throughout the game.

This was just his 15th clean sheet in 44 games across competitions this season. And it was our first clean sheet in a winning cause since the 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United on March 5.

Well-deserved clean sheet

After the game, Jurgen Klopp joked that the former AS Roma was close to being reduced to tears after getting a shutout. The German told Premier League Productions, via BBC:

“Alisson was close to crying with a clean sheet. It’s pretty rare for us this season! It’s very nice, especially for him.”

Alisson, 30, has been an era-defining signing for Liverpool. He is the silver lining from the 2018 UEFA Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid.

Had Loris Karius not had a nightmare performance, who knows if he would have ever signed the Brazil international? He has remained consistent throughout and barring the odd error here and there, has cemented his status as one of the world’s very best, most complete goalkeepers.

His contract expires in June 2027 (Transfermarkt) and there is no way the Reds should let him see out the last of his playing years anywhere else. He is a Liverpool legend already, adding to his status weekly with each performance he gives out.
