“They have got the best goalkeeper”- Pundit urges Liverpool not to “rip up” their squad this summer

Michael Owen suggests Liverpool to not “rip up” the squad in the summer window

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has suggested the Reds to not make wholesale changes to the squad during the summer window.

Owen talked about screaming at the television screens for insane calls regarding the requirement of major changes in the squad for Liverpool in the coming transfer window.

As much as making massive changes in one window may lead to instability and squad disharmony (Chelsea this season has been a perfect example of that), the Reds are set to lose a lot of players in the midfield department due to contracts ending.

So, signing multiple players to bolster that area must be the need of the hour. But, Owen is also right in what he is trying to say. Here’s what he said (h/t Premier League Productions, via Liverpool Echo):

“I have been screaming at the television and I have been looking at social media for so long now and it drives me insane.

“This team months ago, they had won the League Cup, they won the FA Cup, they were the better team in the Champions League and they had won the league with about 20 minutes to go on the last day of the season. They were minutes, and one or two games, away from being one of the most decorated team of all time and then a few months later, just because there have been a few bad performances and it has been a rocky season… ‘Rip everything up’.

“What do you want to rip up here? Go and get another goalkeeper? They have got the best goalkeeper in the world. They have got the best centre-half in the world and they have two of the best full-backs in the world.

“This club has the manager, the players, the board, the fans and everything. We have seen sustained success for years and years and do you know how long it takes to get into a position like that? It’s virtually impossible. Look at Tottenham, look at Manchester United and all these clubs trying to get where Liverpool have been for the last ten years.”

Some sensible points are being made by the former Reds marksman. After an underwhelming season, the tendency is to rip everything up and start afresh. But, if we look at the last few games, it gives us an idea that there is a lot the current crop can offer going forward.

With James Milner set to leave for Brighton, along with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (contracts expiring), there are three slots in the midfield that needs to be filled in the summer.

In the back line, Joel Matip is eyed by AS Roma. With his contract expiring next summer, will there be a temptation to sell him now rather than letting him go for free? Probably so.

Let’s hope that the club makes smart decisions in the coming weeks. Getting a sporting director is involved in that because Julian Ward is set to leave his role at the end of this season.
